Jacob Batalon Cast and New Character Revealed?
The Spider-Man: Homecoming cast is large and talented. We've learned many, if not most, of the names that will be appearing in the film. Yet, we only know a few of the character identities. I've learned some informatiom about a handful of them, and you can read about that here. There's still plenty left to learn, and most of them will probably remain a mystery until Marvel decides to reveal them to us.
However, there's one more actor and character I've recently learned of. First up, let's look at the actor. Until now, this person's identity and role in the film has been a mystery. Turns out, there's a good reason why. Our mystery actor, while being talented and possessing training, was just recently discovered and not on anyone's radar.
I spent lots of time digging for the actor's identity, but kept coming up empty. I was stuck until I was fortunate enough to have a friend help with the investigation. His help opened doors that led to finally discovering our mystery actor's identity. It appears that our mystery actor is Jacob Batalon. He can be partly seen behind Zendaya in the image below that Laura Harrier posted to her Instagram. (More after the image.)
So who is Batalon playing? It's unclear at this point but there's plenty of options: Ganke Lee, Kenny McFarlane, an original character or more. There's also of the possibility he could be playing another character I was just told about.
I've learned that Edward "Ned" Leeds will appear in the film. Leeds is a classic supporting character that first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #18 and named in issue #19. Leeds is a reporter at The Daily Bugle and love interest to Betty Brant. For a time, Peter Parker and Ned Leeds both vied for Brant's affection. Brant and Leeds eventually marry but unfortunately, it's not happily ever after. There's a lot to get into, but I'm going to leave it here for now. If certain story lines are adapted, we could quickly be delving into spoiler territory.
All I have right now regarding the plot and overall direction of MCU Spider-Man is speculation and wishful thinking. However, if stories involving Leeds are adapted, and you're not already familiar with them, I would avoid them just in case.
Leeds was hinted at in viral marketing for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but that iteration has obviously been abandoned. Fortunately, it sounds as if we will be seeing Leeds in Spider-Man: Homecoming. This is great news but this is a fluid process so I'll let you know if anything changes. The more classic Spidey-related characters the better!
